The Power Of Small Beginnings

Do Not Despise the Day of Small Things
“For who hath despised the day of small things? for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel…”

- Zechariah 4:10

The Power of a Small Start

In a world obsessed with instant success and overnight achievements, we often overlook the quiet beginnings, the humble efforts, and the slow progress that precedes greatness. Whether it’s in our careers, spiritual growth, or personal transformation, small steps can feel insignificant. Yet, the Word of God reminds us in Zechariah 4:10 not to despise the day of small things. Every giant oak begins as a tiny acorn. Every great calling has a small beginning. And every victory is first birthed in faith.

God’s Perspective on Small Beginnings

When the prophet Zechariah delivered this message, it was during the rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem. The foundation had been laid, but the work was slow, the people were discouraged, and the future looked uncertain. In the eyes of many, what had been accomplished seemed small and unimpressive. But God had a different perspective.
God sees the end from the beginning. What we see as “small” may be the exact moment heaven celebrates. Why? Because small things done in obedience carry great weight in the spiritual realm. The verse says “they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel”, meaning those who had doubted would one day see the full structure completed. The “plummet” (a measuring tool) symbolizes precision, intentionality, and progress, even when it feels slow.
Faithfulness in the little, trust in the unseen, and persistence despite discouragement are all hallmarks of spiritual maturity. Small wins are not meaningless. They are proof that God is at work, one stone at a time.

Rejoice in the Now

Your journey may feel slow. The progress may be invisible to others. But do not despise it. Celebrate that prayer you finally made today. Honor that small act of obedience. Value the step you took toward healing, forgiveness, discipline, or purpose. In God’s economy, no seed planted in faith goes unnoticed.

Let Zechariah 4:10 be a reminder that the day of small things is still a day the Lord has made, worthy of rejoicing. Trust that the God who starts a good work will surely finish it. And when He does, those who once doubted will rejoice with you.

Small beginnings are not signs of weakness. They are seeds of divine purpose.
